Airport transit visa (no entry)
This section only applies to those persons who are planning to make an international transit at Schiphol airport, from and to countries outside of the Schengen area. Anyone who is planning a double transit (For example if you fly from Japan to Peru and have a transferring flight from the Netherlands to France in between) within the Schengen area will need to apply for a normal Schengen visa, for which the requirements can be found here. If your final destination is a country within the Schengen area, you will have to apply for the Schengen visa at the embassy of your final destination.
As long as you have a valid visa for Japan and have no plans to leave the international area of the airport, you do not need a transit visa for the Netherlands. This applies when you are first going to Japan on your visa, or when your Japanese visa has expired and you are going home as well.
If you do wish to enter the Netherlands during your transit even for just a few hours, you will require a Schengen visa, for which the requirements can be found here. You will not need to provide a hotel reservation if you are only entering the Netherlands for a few hours, however, if your flight includes a layover, we will need to see the hotel reservation for that night as well.
